"I work shifts so the flexibility of learndirect online learning suits my work patterns. I have completed several courses and will now be able to take my European Computer Driving Licence." Warder, Tate Britain Gallery
Learndirect has been set up by the Government to provide access to high quality learning that is flexible - so people can fit learning into their lives at times and places that are convenient.
Most Learndirect courses are offered through the internet (on-line) and can be accessed through Learndirect learning centres and designated access points.
Learndirect also offers a national telephone advice line - 0800 100 900 - that provides information and advice on any aspect on learning.
The PCS open learning centre, located in the PCS organising and learning services offices in central London, offers learndirect on-line courses available on a 'drop-in' basis so that people can come into the centre at times that suit them.
The centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 8pm. It is part of a network of learning centres supported by the TUC. We employ friendly and helpful learning support staff to help you get the most out of your course.
There is a computer course for you whatever your level - whether you are a complete beginner, just want to brush up your skills, or learn new skills.
Courses include an introduction to computers, word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, and using the internet & email. You can work towards and sit the exams for the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification. There is a charge for each ECDL module, with a considerable discount for PCS members.
You can also choose from a range of 'skills for life' courses. You can do a short skills check to work out any areas you might want to improve.
There are courses designed to help you brush up or develop your reading, writing and number skills.
They are a great chance to update skills or simply keep up with your children's homework. You will get full support from sypathetic, qualified tutors. You can also take the new national qualifications in literacy and numeracy. All skills for life assessments are free of charge.
If you would like to do a course in work time you should discuss this with your line manager. You may be able to get time off work by linking the course to your personal development review or your employer's policy on further education. You may be able to get help from your PCS union learning representative.
