Northern

PCS has approximately 27,000 members working in our region, covering Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham, the Tees Valley and Cumbria.

Members are employed in a diverse range of government departments, such as Defra, Department for Work and Pensions and HMRC.

We represent staff in the Government Office for the region, and the local regional deelopment aency, ONE NorthEast.

PCS also continues to negotiate on behalf of members who have been outsourced to the private sector.

Award winning learning centres

Four PCS union-led workplace larning cntres in the region have just been awarded a national quality standard for their delivery of information, advice and guidance on learning and work.

The four learning centres are based at:

  • Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in Newcastle and Peterlee
  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) site at Tyneview Park
  • Longbenton and the Passport Service in Durham

These are the first workplace PCS learning centres to achieve the Matrix standard.

Bargaining

The regional office has direct bargaining responsibility for members working in several civil service employers including ONE NorthEast.

Direct support is given to members working in a number of key areas that have been outsourced to the private sector in recent years.

We negotiate with EDS and Accenture who provide IT services to the Department for Work and Pensions and the Inland Revenue.

Northern TUC

PCS plays a full part in the northern TUC and is represented at all component levels of its regional structure.

We have a team of eight delegates to the annual conference, three to the regional committee and also two serving members of the executive committee.

Learning Services

The centre encourages all our reps to attend the PCS specific courses held at our premises in Newcastle in rotation followed by the TUC courses which can give a broader overview at the various colleges in the region.

All our courses are TUC accredited and are delivered by our experienced tutors.

Communications

The office helps to coordinate our media interface.

We have a regular dialogue with local and regional outlets and ensure that the PCS profile is maintained and developed.
