For the second year hundreds of branches across the country have taken part in the Make Your Vote Count (MYVC) campaign to challenge candidates who stood for election on 1 May on our key concerns of pay, job cuts and privatisation.

Branches and members across the country challenged thousands of prospective candidates by writing letters and holding candidates’ question time events.

Over 1,500 responses were published to members and potential members in workplaces and on the PCS website and reps encouraged members to vote on the responses they could see from candidates about our issues.

Anti-fascist campaigning

PCS reps and members played a key role in raising awareness of the threat of the far right in the run up to the elections by working with local anti-fascist groups to organise leafleting sessions in areas where far right parties fielded candidates.
 
We were also a major sponsor of the Love Music Hate Racism carnival which was held in Victoria park, London at the end of April to mark the 30th anniversary of the iconic 1978 Rock Against Racism carnival and to mobilise a vote against racism in the London Assembly and local council elections.
 
Thousands of people attended and saw artists such as Babyshambles, RAR Allstars featuring very special guests, Jerry Dammers, Roll Deep, Patrick Wolf, Nihal, Adelaide McKenzie, Tom Robinson and Don Letts perform.
 
Every member who got involved should be proud of their activities as we managed to gain support from candidates in the major political parties and also stop the rise of far right parties.
 

Future action 

It’s important now that the election results are known and before the successful candidates take up their post properly that branches make contact with them again to remind them of their commitment to our campaign.
